Microsoft Surface Laptop 5

The controversial one.

Looks great, doesn’t it? The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 has been love-at-first-sight for many people. It looks fantastic and it's a high performance device. However, we hesitated about including it in our list...

You see, this very good looking and thin device is nearly impossible to disassemble and repair if something goes wrong. The memory is soldered on the motherboard making it impossible to upgrade or replace if it fails.

At InnoVent we believe in the use and re-use of technology. A device that can't easily be upgraded or repaired to extend its useful life is a device that is destined to end up in landfill after only 3 to 5 years when things starts to fail.

So why is it on this list? Again, we know it is a device with great performance and aesthetic appeal which is something that our corporate customers always look for. Our hope is that in the future Microsoft will develop this product to make it more sustainable. In the meantime, we chose to include it in our list since it is from a significant manufacturer , has some good capabilities and numerous fans.
